Johann Sebastian Bach (21 March 1685 – 28 July 1750) composed both sacred and secular works for orchestra, choir, and solo instruments. Drawing together the different strands current in the Baroque period, he gave the music of the period its most mature sound. Enriching the existing German style with a contrapuntal technique, an unparalleled harmonic control, and incorporating forms, rhythms and textures from Italy and France, Bach was hugely significant in the development of music.

Bach’s works were numerous. The most famous are: The Art of Fugue, Mass in B Minor, Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, St Matthew Passion, Goldberg Variations, Brandenburg Concertos, Magnificat, Organ Mass, Great Eighteen Chorale Preludes, St. John Passion and Cello Suites.
